The first thing to understand about Trump is that he was brought up to not respect the truth. Lying came naturally in his family and was respected as a means to an end.

His threats regarding the Panama canal, making Canada a state, annexing Greenland, renaming the Gulf of Mexico, and tariffs are ideas put forward by some of his craziest colleagues (he has no friends only temporary allies) and are intended to put himself in a powerful bargaining position with Canada, Mexico, Denmark, and NATO nations.
